RS14_logo78afcc1. Readers Studio and Tarot and Psychology Conference New York April 2014

It is always wonderful in this day of global digital connectivity to actually meet the experts in your field as well as cyber space friends and I had this opportunity when I travelled to New York to attend the Readers Studio Conference  from April 24th to 27th April 2014.  http://www.Tarotschool.com/RS14/index.htmlreaderstsudio.com.  It included the Tarot and psychology conference: http://www.Tarotschool.com/RS14/Tarotpsychologyconference.html on the first day. This a particular interest of mine, connecting the Tarot with psychology, and I found many kindred spirits in the presenters and participants at the conference. Dr. Joe Schippa a practicing psychologist, who uses Tarot, used the phrase ‘thinking of Tarot cards like inkblots in psychology/psychiatry’. He sees the cards as representing untapped creative and life skill resources within the person. Many of us know that the cards especially the  22 known as the Major Arcana represent the enduring patterns that persist in out deeper psyches, they present like  ‘personalities’.  Eg being a rescuer – negative Empress, Moon/ Cancer/ Pisces) or inside us unconsciously and come out as character traits e.g. strict father (Emperor), unconscious urges to control (Emperor, Devil) , or where these dominate and are longstanding, as  ‘complexes’. (neuroses) or even mental health issues e.g. anxiety, depression OR often the big one for Tarot/astrologers: relationship issues. The cards can reflect the inner state of someone’s psyche ( as can the Astrology chart) and enable the client and the reader to access the unconscious , clarify where feelings are coming from i.e. underlying impulses, the replaying of childhood –parent issues  in adult relationships. They are  a rich source of understanding a clients inner world and our own world!

I really enjoyed the way Joe integrated the body into the session by teaching us  a technique of using a tapping ( like acupressure ) technique Emotional Freedom Technique http://www.eft-therapy.com/ includes a free manual! It teaches the emotional system of the brain to reset itself. It restructures the emotions and memories, and helps to calm and enable the client to really engage with Tarot, by reducing anxiety and overwhelming feelings as  the cards can be triggers of past memories and events. It can clear the emotions so that the cognitions or thoughts around a feeling, to identify the stressor. ‘This method of tapping won’t dramatically shift any core issues, it won’t cure any chronic illnesses or heal major childhood traumas, but it will calm a disrupted energy system and help us to retrain the ‘fight, http://www.thrivingnow.com/tapping-points-and-instructions/flight or freeze’ part of our subconscious body-mind.’  To see the techniques go to this  site. http://www.tapintoeft.com/eft-tap-breathe/. It is not only great for clients BUT for readers too. You can use the technique just before a reading to calm yourself. Part of the technique involves an affirmation, which I found profound: ’ even though I have this ..X…. worry/problem, I deeply and freely accept myself ‘.  Many people find this hard to do as they identify with their problems. Cards can expand the client view, that they are more than just the problem dilemma, distress, and thus using a spread more than just e.g. 1- 3 cards for a specific question. I use  a spread that incorporates emotional, spiritual, thinking, health, work, love to expand than the client beyond the problem and this can focus on the broader parts of the person life and resources. I think where Tarot could integrate into this is where a client seems to have low self esteem distress , asking the client to choose cards from some of the more affirming cards can be a way of uplifting their self worth and give them something to aspire to.eg the Sun, Star, temperance. If tapping is used or similar techniques- meditation, deep breathing, a ritual for calming, the Tarot cards enable a deeper connection to the client’s inner complexes but resources also. One of these cards could aid with affirmation described above.

The conference and readers studio have a wealth of information and I will pass on more in my next blog/newsletter.

2. Tarot and African Religions! One Spirit Interfaith Seminary New York  May 2014

‘Beneath the diversity of theological beliefs, rites, and observances lies a deeper unity of experience that is our shared spiritual heritage. Mystical spirituality is the origin of all the world religions, and every authentic spiritual path offers unique perspectives and rich insights into this deeper, direct experience of truth’.(OSIS) I am studying to become an Interfaith Minister, and I see Tarot and Astrology as paths and processes to the inner world and the Infinite.  Many of the earth based religions use divination, like in Tarot, to seek messages and purpose and unity with the Divine. I was privileged to witness a divination, at my Interfaith course in New York,  asking the Orissa, the life process guardians, invisible messengers and helpers of the  Olorun Supreme indefinable being and  the Creator (Olodumare), using water, cola nuts etc, in the Yoruba tradition, by an Afro- American woman. I also used my Tarot cards to seek out the path of our class for the year. We came up with same interpretation! The cards not only enable the opening of the unconscious but enable access to the Gods, to enable entry to a world where the archetypes of the cards speak, and help us to experience our unity with each other and higher Self/Divine.

Have you had similar experiences of this sort of synchronicity? Let me and the other Tarot community know!

via Schoology http://globalspiritualstudies.com/Tarot/jenne-perlstein/counselling-and-mental-health-skills-

for-Tarot-readers-and-astrologers/

After doing a tarot or esoteric reading, have you ever felt you didn’t tune into your client as well as you could have? Maybe it was the way they said one thing but their body language said another, or you felt they were avoiding some obvious issue. Now imagine having a storehouse of practical knowledge about what makes people tick and how much more confident you would feel discussing the wide range of issues clients bring through the door. Jenne Perlstein’s course on counselling and mental health skills will give you exactly that – the knowledge to tune into your clients and practical ways of engaging them in their reading so that the experience is a positive one for both you and your clients.  Topics covered include how counselling relates to astrology, tarot and different healing modalities; ethical issues and setting boundaries; schools of psychology; and mental health issues, including resources to assist clients. Click here to watch a presentation where Jenne discusses the link between counselling, tarot, astrology and healing modalities. It’s a lively discussion with plenty of interaction with people who were in the web conference room during the recording session. Course content: The comprehensive range of topics includes:

  • client issues
  • counselling skills
  • schools of therapy
