Thanks Brigit for these comments…. one often gets reaction from a a client ,with an intake of breath, as the so called typical ‘bad’ cards come out eg Death, The Ten of Swords etc as you have described! Others will say I don’t want to come for reading as I might hear something bad! I think your response has answered these dilemmas so well. Firstly,…. the cards have archetypal meanings ie a character, a story that is complex full of ambiguity ,depth and complexity just like human beings and their life experiences. Thus I was not taught, nor do I use Reverse cards.The cards have enough depth and meaning with out that. Secondly it’s the context, the questions asked, the spread used etc that all inform the interpretation of ‘a’ card. Thirdly even if the reading and cards, with all this in mind, seem to be delivering a challenging or sad message, the way that it is delivered to the client , taking in their particular personal circumstances, insight and current resilience, is crucial. Fourthly a client often knows deeper in their minds or when their defenses drop, what the cards’ messages are ..they know there are hard issues to deal with . You can support them in that.

I agree with Diotima Mantineia that being too concretely predictive is unethical. The psychics who have traumatised the families of kidnap victims are behaving unethically Yes some pagans ( i would see myself as one)psychics, mediums etc are on a continuum of gifts… some can genuinely see the now and the future but I believe they are rare, and all of those in esoteric practices need to be well and ethically trained, and be a part of ongoing professional development and supervision Thus i am a member of the Tarot Guild of Australia ,and I teach and supervise tarot readers /psychics counselling and referral skills. I don’t call myself a psychic. Highly intuitive, highly empathic , sensitive and able to help a client reach down into their unconscious,YES, but like Diotima, I never give client specific predictions eg YES he will come back to you. It is in authentic and disempowering to the client we need to be accountable to each other- via peer support/guilds etc and to clients. we must follow the principle of ‘do no harm’. I am starting a Supervision group, via Skype, for those who want to discuss Tarot, Astrology, other modalities, client issues , counselling skills , mental health, relationship issues etc, that come up with clients.

I am aiming to run this once per month on a Sunday night for 1.5 hours, with a minimum of 3 people per session for it go ahead. I am looking at $35 per session, (paid 48 hrs before OR 3 sessions at $90 if paid in advance). I would facilitate, offer insight from my experience etc but would see it as interactive and sharing our collective wisdom from beginner readers through to advanced.

On April 25th in New York a wonderful conference was held in New York on Tarot and Psychology,http://www.tarotschool.com/RS13/tarotpsychologyconference.html. There was significant discussions about the need for not projecting ones own issues onto clients and leading them to self empowerment as i have previously discussed in my response to the POPE”s comments on ‘not ‘ going to tarot readers to ‘save’ yourself! Tarot readers/counsellors are not rescuers!! This was highlighted at a recent Professional development day for Social workers- my key qualification-reinforcing that no matter how deep a ‘crisis’ for client, we can only provide access to the path , the clarity of decision making, and greater safety, practically – we cant make the painful and life changing choice or save them from those consequences.
