      Thanks to the Tarot Guild Australia – Victoria:    who invited me to facilitate a workshop on Saturday 16th July, on the topic of Tarot  and  Psychology of Relationships. This was a shortened  form of the http://tarotschool.com/RS16/tarotpsychologyconference.html  presentation in New York at the Readers  Studio April 28th 2016. In my last news letter, I   wrote the following about the Workshop with the drawing of 3 cards about the Workshop , and it is curious to see how it manifested!

Rider Waite tarot card 9 - The hermit2014-10-25 10.22.452014-08-02 15.42.37

Cards for the workshop on Sat 16th July to see what learning would come from the experience for participants and myself.

Wheel of Change Tarot Deck by Alexandra Genettii

The cards I drew wereThe Chariot, 10 Cups and Lovers. I would  see this as movement  and progress, connecting to family, their past and present influence manifesting in a eventual constructive way, integrating and aiding more conscious choices in romantic relationships both for the Tarot Reader and client in readings!
Genettis’ interpretations are: the  Chariot bringing  fortune in relationship, but also seeing how your decisions and power connect to the well being of others creating future loss or gain.
The Ten of Cups is  about multi-generational family influences, with repeated patterns and the need to take into account others feelings in the role of parents, and as our ‘inner’ children, a rather apt summary of the Workshop content. The Lovers can be seen as the Self and Other ,with the connection between them being what is meaningful for each;the relationship teaching  differentiation between  what is part of you and what is outside.
These cards bode well for the learning experience of the workshop, with cards that are central to the content of it… action with responsibility, influence of family , emotions and distilling self from the other.I see this latter as crucial for not only the client , but the reader also. It also indicates a balance in what I present , allowing the group to contribute , to be sensitive to feelings and be conscious of the relationship between facilitator and audience members.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Response :The Lovers card, was quite accurate as the key to the topic I was presenting! For each client, it represents the need for inner integration . Participants in the workshop were deeply engrossed in the spreads exploring either their own or  anonymous clients relationships, not just romantic ones! , from the attachment style dynamic within the relationship, to the exploration of the Parent/Child balance using the Parent Adult Child spread. This often indicates where co- dependency might be occurring within the relationship , as well as exploring why this is happening,  and  what might be done about it. Key to this is the individuals willingness to do the ‘inner child’ work of walking the path we see in the Moon card, and to face the fearful aspects in the Devil. It also connects with the Ten of Cups family /inter-generational card in the spread . The Chariot energy was also present as the workshop , as we forged ahead and people were very active and could perceive  the  sometimes adolescent energy in the pursuit of romance, but the need for balance with that pursuit. The rhythm of the workshop felt like the Chariot with energy  from myself, but to and fro with the participants.
Participants commented that they found the  article I wrote in the TGA magazine The Magician -link  below, helpful in enabling greater  depth and reflection about clients relationship dilemmas . There were enthusiastic comments about the workshop, as it related to gently challenging clients, who were at times unwilling to see, for example, their tendency to rescue ( over nurturing Parent- Empress,)  or to continue in destructive relationships ( inner needy vulnerable child-  Moon/Devil, Page of Cups..) Another commented that this workshop enabled them to go deeper than the literal surface meaning of the card eg the sacrificial aspect of the Hanged Man relating to the ‘ rescuing ‘role partners sometimes play.
Ethics was discussed, where we are exploring the relationship, with only one of the partners there. This is very valid, and the focus needs to be on the client’s reading, where relationship dynamics  though, might emerge that are flavored by the clients perspective, and are not going to be necessarily accurately predictive about the partner’s behavior eg being able to tell that they are having an affair or not ,or do they love me?  Rather , it is about the energies within  the client, reflected in the  partnerHere too, we discussed the need for the reader to be aware of their own projections and triggers occurring, when with clients.
We explored the deeper aspects of cards meanings and combinations indicating unbalanced relationships. eg The PAC spread was incredibly useful for experiencing the dynamic between 2 people , with such imbalance. An example was the  Chariot for one person , the The Fool for the other, in the Child positions. Here the energy of the Chariot may mean impulsive, forward moving feelings or behavior from partner A, with open , maybe naive, overly trusting feelings/expectations/behavior from Partner B., particularly as  they are both Major Arcana cards.Thus,  I would consider there being some tension between the 2 , both wanting a great deal emotionally,  possibly impulsivity and Partner A’ rough shodding’ over Partner B. Both their inner emotional needs, may over whelm the relationship. Resources would need to be drawn from the cards coming up in the Parent and Adult positions for each individual , as well as from the respective Partners.
Overall it was great afternoon, and we all continue on the path of these knotty and deep, complex  relationship issues with our clients and ourselves!
Hello.
This is my  newsletter for July 2016, with an alert for an event this coming Saturday July 16th Melbourne ,where I am presenting a portion of the Tarot and Psychology Conference New York Workshop focussing on Tarot Spreads and strategies to assist the client in regard to Co- dependency and Obsession.
I am  Back from New York ( and Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica, Barbados, Grenada)  as Speaker at the Tarot and Psychology Readers Studio conference which was  on the 28th April 2016the first day of the Readers Studio conference, which is one of the largest Tarot conferences in the world. http://tarotschool.com/RS16/tarotpsychologyconference.html with Tarot, Psychology and Relationships as my topic. It was a deep and fulfilling experience to present at this conference. I received many positive comments from participants, and some of you were there! Thanks you for your support and feedback. People commented that they felt the spreads enabled them to understand their own relationships better, and offered skills and deepening with their work with clients. The self reflection and feedback from others was basically ‘less is more’ . I offered a large amount of information – enough for a book! . The latter I am planning to work on. It was a workshop that could have been less academic and more Tarot! Thus , it was an opportunity for me to refine and focus on the key points , in future, as well as some more focus on strategies for assisting people to move beyond their challenging relationship dynamics. For those of you who attended my presentation, PLEASE SEND ME YOUR COMMENTS, as I would like to capture those as Testimonials , if you are happy to do so , even anonymously. Thanks to those who already have!   jenneperl@gmail.com
As a follow up to this, I am presenting the Workshop at :
the Tarot Guild in Melbourne  Sat July 16th 2016 2pm in Blackburn , a portion of the Tarot and Psychology Conference New York Workshop focussing on Tarot Spreads and strategies to assist the client in regard to Co- dependency and Obsession.  http://www.tarotguild.org.au/events/victoria
and I am offering Tarot Classes in the North/West Melbourne Sept 6th 2016… see below.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following is an article I wrote ,published in the Readers Studio Tarot School newsletter in June 2016. http://www.tarotschool.com/TarotTips160601.html
RELATIONSHIPS – THE THORNY QUESTIONWhat if a client can’t find love?

Often clients come asking this question, or it emerges during the Tarot consultation. While there are many reasons why someone can’t find love, some of the most common ones are related to early childhood experiences. Most parents do their best at the parenting process. But clients will sometimes say ‘I had a good upbringing,’ then tell you about significant early difficulties of a psychological/emotional nature. For example, a recent client told me her family rarely went out, she wasn’t allowed the usual childhood experiences like riding a bike, and she had to ‘tip toe’ around her mother so as not to upset her – the pseudo parnet role, mentioned further.
Parents often replay the patterns of parenting that they experienced as children, ( complex Trauma of Childhood) or as a consequence of other events/traumas in their lives such as war, Holocaust, economic hardship, etc.
Formative Relationships.
When questions of love come up in a reading, I may ask about the client’s family of origin, specifically their relationship with their mother, father and siblings, and about the relationship between their parents.
The first few years of life, from birth to three years of age, are crucial for attachment and the development and imprint of emotional experiences in the brain. The client will often say they can’t remember details from that
period of their lives, but you might be able to extrapolate from how they experienced their parents during that period.Ask questions such as:
• If you were upset could you go to your parents for support?
• Could you talk to your parents about what was troubling
you? Could you express anger? Could you cuddle with them?
• Did you have to be the ‘parent’ for your parents or their ‘pseudo’ spouse? ie put their needs first; look after other family members; be your parents’ friend’?
• What happened if you were naughty?

Often these experiences emerge during the process of the consultation, with just some prompts.
Here’s another question to ask:
• What number sibling position are you in the family?
Youngest are sometimes ignored or given too much attention,the middle child could feel lost and sandwiched between the others. The eldest is often the more ‘parent-identified’, overly responsible child, sometimes taking care of the younger ones or the parent(s) themselves. That care maybe emotional /psychological and subtle, where the child’s needs were secondary and the parent’s needs came first. While I can’t go into all the possibilities here, themes like these often emerge and give clues to the client’s relationship issues.
How Tarot Can Help
With a sense of some of the theory, a Tarot spread can be useful in adding clarity and detail. Use a 3-card triangle spread of the client plus two parental figures or caretakers. (Even if one of the parents is absent, they still play a role.)

Parent 1   Parent 2

     Child

Have the client shuffle and draw a card for each position.You may decide to use Major Arcana only. Interpret with a view to 1. Exploring the relationship between the parents and 2. The relationship of each to the child.Given the original information gleaned from the client, further information may come out as you interpret with your usual tarot skills. For example, wands for mother might indicate a fiery, passionate, self-involved mother.If the father is pentacles/earth, maybe there was some lack of understanding, a focus on practical/financial matters, or dominance of the mother over the father.Use the client’s impression of the cards to aid the interpretation. You might also look at whether or not the figures are facing each other. Bring your skills and your style as a reader to the interpretation.The relationship between parents is crucial, as this is the model to the child of what intimacy is about. If it is a poor parental ‘marriage,’ the child may conclude that “If this is love/intimacy, then I don’t want it!”.Thus we begin to answer the original question and get a sense of what is going on for the client. Often this is unconscious and new to them, but some have awareness of these issues and can integrate these insights with the reader’s help.
Inner Child Work
Inner child work is another area to explore. It is possible to answer the question, “What does your inner child need to enable openness to a relationship?” with a simple, non-positional 3-card spread, that focuses on needs and action to be taken.Insights drawn from the cards in this simple standard reading may enable a client to cast some light on the connection between their family of origin and their adult relationships, and why finding a partner seems elusive. By getting in touch with their inner child, they may recognize subtle patterns of relationships like avoidance by choosing impossible partners, or by choosing avoidant types who can’t commit, when they tend to be anxious and insecurely attached themselves. Attention to the inner child can enable self-love and attention to needs that the inner nurturing parent can address, thus lessening the pressure to have those needs met by another. A healthy relationship can ‘top up’ our emotional and intimacy needs.  As a Tarot reader, you may be able to offer some ‘predictive’ possibilities as well, but this insight-based approach can give clarity and direction for the client, and lead to an overall deepening of the reading.

Consultations:

My Tarot and Astrology combined with psycho- spiritual counselling consultancy, continues to have amazing interactions with clients, where I feel privileged that they open up to the process of exploring their issues, their unconscious and life’s meaning. Many are dealing with relationships, and the long term outcomes of difficult upbringings. Some want to keep  to Tarot directly , and that I cater for. I am there to be client centred. I graduated from One Spirit Interfaith Seminary in June 2015 as an Interspiritual Minister embracing all faiths and paths including humanism. It was rich course and focused on the Divine within us , the Divine between us and all creation, experiencing the Mystic Heart of all spiritual and religious paths, becoming more our true Selves.  Tarot and Astrology are a divinatory way of accessing this energy through symbol and myth. I often mix spiritual counselling with Tarot and Astrology and the other way around too! Recent clients have ranged from a person having left a strict fundamentalist religion , through to aiding a client and her children to leave her violent husband and general  counselling about an unfaithful partner  and grief over a pet.

I am increasingly seeing that Tarot and Astrology are just one of the tools I access in my overall PSYCHO-SPIRITUAL counselling and consulting, wherein sessions may include Tarot , but also move into family of origin and relationship issues, and into spiritual meaning and direction.The cards or chart are often an entry point to the internal issues, as well the very real external ones. I love this way of working, and especially as it responding to the particular clients needs at the time… neither of us are ‘stuck’ in a particular way of doing things…..sometimes it is just talking, or it maybe meditation, or asking the client their response to a card….

For my Consultations you can access me via Skype for easier access if you are international, interstate or its easier to do it that way!  as well as face to face appointments ,and you can pay by  PAY PAL buttons on my site:  www.tarotastrocounselling.com.au .

‘Awareness Counselling’.

Supervision.

I offer Supervision to Tarot readers/Astrologers needing input around Clients –  Relationships, Mental health issues, Personality disorders, Substance abuse, Difficult Clients, Family Violence etc. or Tarot- Client work generally.

Tarot, Psychology and Relationships March 2016

Tarot, Psychology and Relationships
Jenne Perlstein
March 2016
As Tarot consultants, and clients, we see and hear the idealism, romantic hopes and  anguish  about (the) ‘relationship’. The cards may reveal many facets about the situation, and as the Tarot consultant we try to interpret, guide and counsel in response to the eternal questions from clients:
Does he love me?
Will he come back to me?
Will I get married?
Is there someone new on the horizon?
I know we are meant to be together, but when’s it going to happen!??
Is she having an affair?
Why don’t my relationships ever work out?
Why can’t I get over him?
 Tarot consultants, ask:
Why are they so obsessed?
Can’t they see the relationship is over?
Can’t they see he/she is no good for them?
Why do they keep having these difficult relationships?
Can’t they take some responsibility?
Why do they keep coming back looking for magic answers, from me?…
With these questions and dilemmas in mind, I have focussed on these areas for many years in my Tarot and counselling work, building knowledge, further experience, delivering workshops and talks to colleagues, attempting to develop greater skills for myself and others  in this sometimes vexed area. As part of my passion for Tarot and its links to counselling and psychology, I attended the Readers Studio – Tarot and Psychology Conference in New York in April 2014, which is one of the largest Tarot conferences in the world. It was inspiring to be surrounded by Tarot readers/consultants in the same field of interest, and to receive profound learning from wise teacher’s, psychologists, therapists, counsellors who work with Tarot. Little did I know then, that I would be presenting a workshop at the Tarot and Psychology Conference in New York April 28th 2016, this year on the Psychology of Relationships in Tarot. http://www.Tarotschool.com/RS15/index.html
In the presentation, I am using the questions I have posed about relationships, with the cards of the Lovers, the Devil, the 6 Cups and the Moon as a focus to examine the key areas of psychological attachment, parent- child relationship and family of origin, (the Moon, 6 Cups) as the starting point. Attachment is the beginning of the parent -child bond, and the essential start of self-worth, resilience, healthy self-love & separation from parents, and boundary setting. (Empress, Moon). ‘Children attach not merely for food but for physical & emotional intimacy’. Scofield. This is the core of ‘good enough’ parenting.
Secure attachment can go ‘wrong’ due to often poor nurturance from parent to child,  and lead to anxious (9 Swords), ambivalent, (Hanged Man), avoidant,( Fool)  disorganised, even abusive (Devil, Tower) attachment styles in adults. Those who are anxious can become dependent in their relationships, or those with avoidant attachment style can have relationships, but are highly defensive and often repress emotion or create dynamics to avoid commitment; some fluctuate between anxiety and avoidance, but underneath craving the nurturance they didn’t receive as children. Many may develop addictions e.g. alcoholism, pornography, sex addiction or ‘work- aholism’, adding to the burden of dysfunctional relationships. (Hanged Man -sacrifice, Devil -compulsion, 9 Cups- complacency/avoidance).
Drawing out the connection between parent /child relationship and adult relationship intimacy issues is the crux of working with Tarot clients in trying to answer the eternal relationship questions mentioned earlier. ‘Research has been able to confirm that our adult relationships are shaped by our early patterns of attachment and with the ways of dealing with closeness, separation and love’ (Schneider, Gruman & Coutts, 2005).  ‘Adult relationships re- awaken unfinished business & patterns from the first bonding situation with the carer/ parent’. (Greene)
In the workshop at the conference, I will be looking specifically at co – dependent and obsessive relationships commonly seen in Tarot consultations, portrayed by the Lovers, the Devil and the Hanged Man with the latter’s self-sacrifice, martyrdom and idealism. Co-dependency is defined as: ‘Person with unmet nurturing needs in childhood, seeks a ‘parent ‘in adult relationships. Conversely a person who wants to ‘mother’/control/rescue/be responsible, seeks a needy/irresponsible ‘child’ ( D. Cunningham). Lovers move from ‘infatuation’ in the Devil (Passion) stage of romance to a, hopefully, more adult and equal relationship of the Lovers, communing with Divine guidance and in touch with their individuality and meeting the needs of their own inner child. But the Devil looms large and many couples remain in this state of co-dependency or are never actually ‘in’ the relationship in reality, only via their fantasy, perception and obsession. Often there has been poor modelling of a healthy ‘marriage ‘from the parents. People thus ‘seek to try to unconsciously/ compulsively regain the blissful connection, the unattainable ‘original’ feeling, and the oneness with mother/caregiver’. (Greene).
The presentation will include Tarot spreads, developed by me, based on psychological approaches discussed in the presentation e.g. (Transactional Analysis) Parent –Adult – Child PAC Spread© Jenne Perlstein 2016 which looks at the core of the interactions between all of us, with the Parent- Child dominating in co-dependent and obsessive relationships, rather than  Adult to Adult relationships (Temperance).)  Used with Tarot, this is a powerful tool to analyse a client’s current relationship, as well as patterns or tendencies in relationship styles, and thus offer insight into why they keep attracting the same type of relationship over and over (9 wands) and ways to change this, by the healing of their inner child wounds. This is not an easy path (Death) and many will choose not to take it.This is where acceptance, on our part, of where the client is at, is crucial. Some may not wish to go beyond the ‘who/when is the next romantic lover round the corner?’ and choosing to continue on the ‘merry go round’ of the Devils’ obsession and co-dependency and the Inner child’s (Moon, Page of Cups) craving for love. The client isn’t willing to take the steps to actually gain self-love. (The Star, Temperance)
The Iceberg ‘psyche’ Spread (©Jenne Perlstein 2016) uses Freud’s ground-breaking work to look at the unconscious (Id), Inner child (Id/Ego) and parental (Superego) voices, so often deeply embedded in our psyche’s.  Not accessible by ‘the thinking/memory mind’, rather evidenced by our behaviours, feeling ‘in love’, and in our bodies, this spread brings the unconscious to the surface. It can add to the readers abilities to understand the underlying motivations of clients relationship issues; give the reader enhanced skills in applying the psychology of relationships with clients, and to have greater boundary setting and referral ability, as well as offering some steps for the client to take to begin to resolve their dysfunctional relationship patterns. This may involve your own skills and wisdom, but referral may also be an outcome. E.g.  today, as I write this, I referred a woman client urgently to Domestic Violence Services, http://www.safesteps.org.au/ recommending she take her children, seated in my hallway, and herself, to her parents’ home and contact Safe Steps immediately, as I believe she was in a volatile, co-dependent, controlling relationship, where violence was escalating.
The other area I touch upon is the likely awakening and triggering of one’s OWN patterns of parent /child and adult romantic relationships, by undertaking this workshop or exploring these issues. A key point here is that children need ‘good’ enough parenting- basically empathy, nurturance and individual respect from parents, not perfection. We all need to examine our own inner child issues to have healthy ‘adult’ romantic relationships, an ongoing at times painful and challenging process. Ultimately expressed as the Lovers and The World, with their integration and resolution.
The workshop will be recorded and hopefully available for you to listen to via the Tarot School. http://www.Tarotschool.com/RS15/index.html .This article is a taste of it, and I hope to present it at the Tarot Guild Australia in Victoria later in 2016. The cards I mention are ones that reflect an aspect of the dynamic or energy I have discussed and are not exhaustive. Part of the creativity of the workshop process is to see what cards and combinations can capture the issues/problems and some actions to enable healing.

1. Tarot Reading for the Spring Equinox

images (1) imagesdownload

Druidcraft Deck

 The Spring Equinox.. the High Priest , Cernunnos, (Devil) and the Five of Pentacles.

On a base level, ‘a devil of a time’ with temptation to go’ off the beaten track’ for a  cause or experience with maybe  a broken heart as the outcome! Spring often does that! The sense of release from the  cold winter of  curtailment and now we plunge into indulgence. The High Priest surrounded by a very Spring like vista, says authenticity and listening to your inner ethic and wise teacher is important , but also  he understands we need to ‘break out’, as the spirit of Cernunnos has us do .So break free into the green, the lengthening daylight and passion. But there maybe consequences though, that one is likely to get over. Interesting that there are equal numbers of male and female in the cards, which equates with the balance of masculine and feminine at the Equinox . The lovers in the foreground asleep and content. It is a time to know your inner voice, know what is right and wrong but to also be passionate. Just do it in a way that the Higher Self says is ok. Not too much indulgence, but as Cernunnos- the Horned God of the seasons, life and death and rebirth,The Stag , he says we are human, we need to indulge to feel passion….. Follow that, but not at the cost of your or another’s integrity.

3. ‘Getting out of the Chair in a Tarot Consult’! Gestalt Therapy & Tarot: Excerpt from Tarot and Psychology Conference New York April 2014.

RS14_logo78afcc

I travelled to New York to attend the Readers Studio Conference from April 24th to 27th April this year.  http://www.Tarotschool.com/RS14/index.htmlreaderstsudio.com.  It included the Tarot and psychology conference: http://www.Tarotschool.com/RS14/Tarotpsychologyconference.html on the first day. This a particular interest of mine, connecting the Tarot with psychology, and I found many kindred spirits in the presenters and participants at the conference. The conference is on again in 2015 in New York….. so consider going. It is amazing! http://www.tarotschool.com/RS15/index.html.

‘Getting out of the chair’, my title for a session at the conference by Kooch Daniels and her partner, Vic Daniels looked at the demonstration  of Gestalt counselling approaches with Tarot. Gestalt focuses on the here and now and bodily experiences and the experience of a person with their environment and the people in it. rather than ‘in the head’ approaches. It uses techniques such as 2 chair work . They had me up on stage as  a guinea pig! Where I used a problem with a friend to illustrate the moving form how I felt, to then shifting into a chair to be her, and to say how she felt or might say! It was very enlightening and enabled me to see her perspective and to keep moving chairs until I felt a resolution, and I knew what to say.The chairs can be exchanged for cards! With asking the attitude of the other person say in a conflict, with cards revealing new perspectives. So one card for the client, one card for the other person. It thus strips away words and  focuses on experience. It takes a client from their head, from expectations to more how they really are and what they really want. Gestalt with the cards would also suggest the reader REALLY listens to their inner feelings, thoughts, perceptions including body language, about the client. E.g. if the reader feels irritated with client, to note this, and feed it back if and when appropriate in a sensitive way. Is this how others might perceive the person? The cards can show obstacle and alliances, within a relationship.

Kooch talked about using cards turned over, deliberately chosen to represent the various people in a persons life. To evoke feelings eg a card that looks like the angry man in the clients life e.g. the Knight of Wands, the Hierophant. Positioning cards too such that the top card is the surface problem and cards underneath show the underlying feeling eg moon at the bottom meaning you are feeling self protective. Vic suggested spread based on the clients inner world! E.g. what I need /want; personal centre now; influence /challenges; what I feel; work I need to do. This is in contrast to the outer worlds concerns many clients have, but may move push a client to be more reflective and to take some responsibility in their lives.

New Tarot column with Astrology

ciad91abc    New Tarot column with Astrology! Jenne is now writing a blog with the CIA Cosmic Intelligence Agency  where I take astrology events coming up in the month ahead , and look at how they correspond with Tarot. I use the  Celestial Tarot deck written by my astrology teacher Brian Clark and using the beautiful paintings of Kay Steventon.  It is a rather different approach but so far seems to work , and enables the astrology of the month to be expressed in a deep way with the visuals of the Tarot. I am enjoying writing it , and finding it corresponds very well to life as it unfolds. See last months below and go to the CIA website soon for the September entry.
